A Cruz do Magalhães (Magellan’s Cross)!

A “souvenir” brought by Fernão de Magalhães when he disembarked in Cebu, Philippines in 1521. Magalhães then engaged in some dangerous alliances with local tribes, which ultimately led to his death. While some tribes converted to Christianity, other didn’t. He was later killed in battle with a tribe led by Datu Lapu-Lapu, who is regarded as the first Filipino hero because he was the first native to resist Spanish colonization. Take that, Iberians!

Nowadays the cross is in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, in Cebu City. Picture is from 2014, the cross was under some kind of maintenance then.
